Red Chris Mine

Red Chris is a large, open-pit copper-gold mine located In Tahltan Territory approximately 80km south of Dease Lake, British Columbia. Newmont holds a 70% interest in the Red Chris Operations, and Imperial holds the remaining 30% interest. The operation consists of a 30,000t per day capacity mill and employs approximately 1800 workers, including approximatley 300 Tahltans. In 2023, Red Chris produced 39 koz of Gold  and 18kt  of Copper. The operation spends nearly C $750M annually with suppliers with approximately 30% of spend going directly to Indigenous suppliers.

The next phase for Red Chris is an Underground Block Cave Expansion, which will be the largest of its kind in Canada.

Tahltan First Nation

The Red Chris Mine is located within the unceded traditional territory of the Tahltan First Nation. Through an Impact, Benefit, and Co-Management Agreement (IBCA), Newmont is pleased to be working with Tahltan First Nation to create key business partnerships and employment opportunities.

Newmont is also pleased to be advancing the Red Chris Underground Block Cave Expansion project through a Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People’s Act Section 7 Consent-Based Decision-Making Agreement between Tahltan Nation and the Province of British Columbia
